Goodbye and thank you to four World Cup host cites

arena-pantanal-cuiaba-1With the end of the group stages of the 2014 World Cup on 26 June, four of the twelve host Brazilian cities will have completed their hosting duties for the tournament and will now be dimming the lights at their stadiums.

So a massive obrigado and thank you to the host cities of Cuiaba, Curitiba, Manaus and Natal for a job well done. You have done Brazil proud.

Brazilian animated film wins top prize at Annecy Film Festival

Boy and the WorldAle Abreu’s The Boy and the World (O menino e o mundo), which screened at Festival do Rio in Première Brasil: New Trends, has taken the top prizes at the prestigious international animation festival in Annecy. The film won both the festival’s Cristal Award as well as the audience award for favourite film during the 38th festival.

This is the second year in a row that a Brazilian feature has won the top prize. In 2013 the Cristal Award went to Luiz Bolognesie’s Uma história de amor e fúria (Rio 2096).

The new Doctor Who and friends head to Rio de Janeiro

doctor_who_peter_capaldiThe BBC has announced that the new Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi, is to visit Rio de Janeiro on 19 August. A reflection of the importance of the Brazilian market and the popularity of Doctor Who in Brazil.

The trip will see the twelfth Doctor, Capaldi, on-screen companion Jenna Coleman, and the show’s lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, visit seven cities across five continents in 12 days, where they will attend fan events and media interviews, publicising Series 8 to a global audience.

The tour, which starts on 7 August, marks the largest ever promotional undertaking in Doctor Who’s 50-year history and will kick off in the Welsh capital and home of the series’ production, Cardiff, before taking in London, Seoul, Sydney (Australia), New York, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro. BBC Worldwide’s ambition for the brand has grown since the global success of the 50th anniversary, which saw the special episode The Day of the Doctor broadcast simultaneously in 98 countries and in over 1,500 theaters across the world.

Foz do Iguaçu records highest ever volume of water

On Monday, 9 June 2014, Foz do Iguaçu recorded its highest ever volume of water passing over the falls, a staggering 46 million liters of water per second, 30 times higher than the normal 1.5 million liters per second. This was the result of heavy rainfall in the southern states, especially Parana. The previous record of 35 million liters had been set back in 1983.

Over 150,000 visit the Brazil and World Cup guide sites

Tickets go on sale for the Brazilian Formula 1 Grand Prix

Brazil Day marks opening of World Cup in London

Screen Shot 2014-05-31 at 14.37.39To mark the opening on the World Cup on 12 June, Trafalgar Square in London will be hosting Brazil Day, a free festival celebrating Brazil’s culture and its passion for football. The event that runs from noon to 7 pm, is being organised by Brazil’s Ministry of Sport, Ministry of Culture and by the Embassy of Brazil in London, which is located in Trafalgar Square. It is also supported by the Mayor of London.

The event will include live music, DJs, dance lessons, capoeira and much more. The event, however, will not include the screening of the opening match between Brazil and Croatia that kicks off at 9 pm, but a football zone will offer games and activities for all ages, including an inflatable football pitch and a photo-op with a life-size picture of the Brazilian national team.

There will also be stalls selling typical Brazilian street-food and snacks, along with smoothies and soft drinks made from exotic Amazonian fruits.

The Embassy says that fans of all nations that want to get into the spirit are invited to wear the Brazilian national colours of yellow, green and blue.
