Two Brazilian hotels picked by Wallpaper as amongst top eight urban hotels

Brazil is home to two of the eight hotels chosen by Wallpaper* magazine from a short list of 37 as the best urban hotels in the world for 2019.

The chosen hotels in Brazil, the only in Latin America, are the Janeiro hotel in Rio, which fills the building on the beachfront in Leblon that many will remember as the Marina Rio, and the B Hotel in Brasilia.

The other hotels listed by Wallpaper were The Jaffa in Tel Aviv; Trunk House in Tokyo; Soho House in Mumbai; Rosewood in Hong Kong; Raffles in Singapore; and The August in Antwerp.

As Wallpaper noted: “These destination hotels demonstrate flexibility in a brave and competitive new world.  There’s never been a more exciting time to check in.”

12 Brazilian films in running for Oscar nomination

Brazil has announced the 12 films from which one will be chosen to be submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles as Brazil’s Oscar entry in the new category of best international feature film (previously Foreign Language). The list includes two documentaries (“Humberto Mauro” e “Espero tua (re)volta”) and two films that premiered in Cannes in May 2019

The 12 films are:

“A vida invisível”, by Karim Aïnouz
“Sócrates”, by Alex Moratto
“A última abolição”, by Alice Gomes

The jury to choose the film to go forward is made up of directors Anna Muylaert, David Shürmann and Zelito Viana; producers Sara Silveira and Vania Catani; diretor of photography, Walter Carvalho; screenwriter Mikael de Albuquerque; critic, curator and founder of the festival É Tudo Verdade, Amir Labaki; and the director of Festival do Rio, Rio’s international film festival, Ilda Santiago.

Brazil wins its ninth Copa America

Brazil beat Peru 3-1 in Rio de Janiero’s Maracanã Stadium on Sunday 7 July to win its 9th Copa America. The victory also maintained Brazil’s record of winning the Copa America every time they have hosted it. Five times in total.

Brazil dominated the tournament, but it was the team’s first tournament win since picking up the Olympic gold medal in the Maracanã in 2106, and previously winning the Confederations Cup, also in the Maracanã, in 2013. It is a first Copa America title in 12 years.

Five Brazilian Restaurants in the World’s Top 100

Five Brazilian restaurants have been ranked in the world’s Top 100 for 2019. Highest ranked is Casa do Porco in São Paulo at number 39. Also in São Paulo are D.O.M. at 54 and Mani at 73.

Rio de Janeiro has two restaurants in the top 100. Lasai at number 74 and Oteque at 100.

Mangueira Champion of Rio’s 2019 Carnival

Estação Primeira de Mangueira is the champion of Rio’s top samba schools for the 20th time in its illustrious history after scoring a perfect total of 270 in 2019. Second, with 269.7 points, was Viraduro who have only just returned to the elite competition.

Brazilian Beach is World’s Best

15449770379_c35a1266f5_bBaia do Sancho, a beach on the small island of Fernando de Noronha, off the northeast coast of Brazil, has again been named the world’s best beach in the Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice awards. It is the third time the beach has been chosen as the world’s best.

Fernando de Noronha can be reached by daily flights from Natal or Recife.

A second Brazilian beach, Prainhas do Pontal do Atalaia, close to Arraial do Cabo in the state of Rio de Janeiro, was voted 12th best.

Brazilian directors head for Cannes

Two Brazilian directors will have their films screened in the official section of this year’s Festival de Cannes

Carlos Diegues, who has had three films screen in competition at Cannes, will receive a special screening and the world premiere of his latest film “O Grande Circo Místico” (The Great Mystical Circus – photo). In 2012 Diegues’was chair of the Caméra d’or jury.

Sao Paulo born, LA based director Joe Penna, better known to his You Tube followers as Mystery Guitar Man, is to get a special midnight screening of his first feature, the thriller “Arctic” which stars Mads Mikkelsen, who headlined NBC’s Hannibal series.

LATAM Airline adds new routes connecting Brazil

LATAM Airline will launch the first route connecting Israel and Latin America with a new flight from Tel Aviv to Santiago (Chile), via São Paulo (Brazil), as of December. There will be three weekly flights by Boeing 787 aircraft offering 217 economy seats and 30 in premium business.

For 2018 the airline has announced a further 14 international routes that include flights to Rome from São, Paulo, which began in March as well as new operations to Las Vegas (June), Boston (July), Lisbon, and from Fortaleza, in the Brazilian northeast, to Orlando, Florida.

The first scheduled nonstop flights to Las Vegas from Brazil will begin 2 June 2018 with services every Monday, Thursday and Saturday.  The initial seasonal service will operate through 30 September 2018. The route will then return on 15 December 2018 through 28 February 2019.
Brazil represents Las Vegas’seventh strongest overseas market and is the greatest source of international visitors from South America, with more than 150,000 Brazilians visiting annually.
