New music festival – The Town – for São Paulo in 2023

it has been confirmed that in September 2023 Rock in Rio will morph into “The Town”, a new music festival for São Paulo, which will take place at the Grand Prix circuit of Interlagos over two weekends.

600,000 people will be expected over the five days of the festival that has Heineken as its main sponsor and will be supported by TV Globo and Multishow. The stage set and setting will reflect the skyscrapers of São Paulo. It is probably that Brazil will see Rock in Rio and The Town on alternate years. There is certainly the demand.

Brazilian Festival Fever in London

The final leg of Brasil Junino’s European road show is being held in London. The event is a cultural exhibition that seeks to promote Brazil’s famous Festas Juninas, or June Festivals, and is being hosted by the Embassy of Brazil in London from 27 May to 4 June.

Several headline acts are already confirmed as part of the line-up, including Zeu Azevedo, a legendary Brazilian musician, composer and saxophonist. The festival also features live dance recitals, or quadrilhas juninas, by Si Bobiá a Gente Pimba, from Brasilia and Raio de Sol, from Recife. There will also be a series of live street performances in  central London, to help promote the initiative.

The 10-day programme – which includes stage performances, presentations, traditional costumes, as well as an exhibition profiling the June festivals – gives the British publc an exclusive opportunity to experience these uniquely Brazilian festivities, which normally occur throughout June each year.

“These festivals offer a rare and insightful snapshot of the Brazilian people, set to a tantalizing backdrop of colour and sound”, explains Edilane Oliveira, Brasil Junino’s curator. “Brazilians famously love to party, but the Festas Juninas, or June Festivals, are a fascinating expression of Brazilian culture and symbolism – it is a story that needs to be told. Brasil Junino is our way of shining a light on our coveted festivities and getting Londoners to join in the fun”, she added.

Brasil Junino has already received critical acclaim in Brazil, after it received more than 500,000 visitors in Rio de Janeiro, during Rio 2016. Now in London, having already visited Lisbon, Madrid and Rome, the organisers hope not only to promote tourism and culture in Brazil, but also effectively kindle relationships between Brazil and the UK.

Brasil Junino opens on 27 May and runs to 4 June at the Embassy of Brazil in London, 14-16 Cockspur St, St. James’s, London SW1Y 5BL. It is open to the public from 1pm to 7pm daily and entry is free. A full list of the program and further information is available at

Rock in Rio 2015 takes shape

RiR 05-2Queen, the stars of the first ever Rock in Rio in 1985 (photo), and Metallica are the latest acts to be added to the line-up for Rock in Rio 2015. Metallica last played Rock in Rio in 2013.

Queen and Metallica join other acts announced that include Katy Perry, who also performed in 2013, John Legend, A-Ha (that attracted a crowd of 198,000 in 1991 when the festival was staged at the Maracãna), System of a Down, Queens of the Stone Age (who played in 2001), Slipnot (who played in 2011), Faith No More (who played in 1991), and Hollywood Vampires, the new super group made up of Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp and Joe Perry.

The festival takes place between 18 and 27 September 2015 close to where the Olympic Village is being built. Prior to that, in May, Rock in Rio will be staged for the first time in Las Vegas.

Ayrton Senna drives Unidos da Tijuca to carnival victory

12923446995_1ccbe839d2_bWith a samba based on the life and times of Brazilian Formula One great, Ayrton Senna, Unidos da Tijuca drove to victory as the top samba school in Rio de Janeiro for 2014.

The very last of the twelve top samba school to parade, Unidos da Tijuca won a very close fought contest with Salgueiro, winning by just 0.1 of a point out of 300. The winner in 2013, Vila Isabel, could only manage tenth place in 2014.

Placing is important as the winning school can choose when it will parade the following year. The next school has second choice, and so on, until the one school coming up from the second division, Viradouro in 2015, gets the spot that is left.

azimuth:0.000000||elevation:0.000000||horizon:0.000000Normally the school choose to go late on, even last if they can, but there is a danger in going last as if for any reason the parade gets delayed, and it has been known to happen, then the last school may be going out in the first light of dawn or even daylight. Like a rock concert, that can make a big difference to the visual impact.

As well as the theme of Ayrton Senna, themes in 2014 included African rhythms (Imperio da Tijuca); the city of Marica (Grande Rio); Rio’s favelas, the city’s famous shanty towns (São Clemente); Brazilian celebrations (Mangueira); sustainability and preservation (Salgueiro); a tribute to one of Brazil most famous television executives, Bonifácio de Oliveira Sobrinho, o Boni (Beija-Flor); Pernambuco (Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel); children’s toys (União da Ilha); Brazil’s natural and historical heritage (Vila Isabel),; Zico, one of Brazil’s greatest footballers and part of the best Brazilian team not to win the World Cup (Imperatriz Leopoldinense); and Avenida Rio Branco (Portela).

azimuth:0.000000||elevation:0.000000||horizon:0.000000The full results for 2014 were:

  • Unidos da Tijuca (299.4 points out of 300)
  • Salgueiro (299.3)
  • Portela (299.0)
  • União da Ilha do Governador (298.4)
  • Imperatriz Leopoldinense (297.6)
